Review: Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

Incarceron (Incarceron #1)
Author: Catherine Fisher
Publisher: Dial
Publication Date: January 26, 2010
Pages: 442
Source: Hardcover/Borrowed

A thrilling, high-concept fantasy for fans of Garth Nix and Nancy Farmer.

Incarceron is a prison so vast that it contains not only cells, but also metal forests, dilapidated cities, and vast wilderness. Finn, a seventeen-year-old prisoner, has no memory of his childhood and is sure that he came from Outside Incarceron. Very few prisoners believe that there is an Outside, however, which makes escape seems impossible.

And then Finn finds a crystal key that allows him to communicate with a girl named Claudia. She claims to live Outside- she is the daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, and doomed to an arranged marriage. Finn is determined to escape the prison, and Claudia believes she can help him. But they don't realize that there is more to Incarceron than meets the eye. Escape will take their greatest courage and cost more than they know.

Review: After getting through the first few chapters I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't because the first few chapters were bad, it was because things were a bit confusing to me at times until it was explained. But even in the confusion those chapters were still pretty good writing wise. This book was definitely unique! But in a good way!

Finn. He is trapped inside Incarceron. A prison that's alive. It listens to everything you say and it even responds sometimes. Its a prison that doesn't let any of its sons or daughters even find a way of escaping (or so it seems). Finn is a starseer (he has visions) but yet hes haunted by these pieces of memories he seems to remember that makes him think he wasn't born there, but outside and brought in. These feelings get even stronger when he get his hands on a crystal, the key to Incarceron.

Claudia. She lives on the outside, where everyone thinks Incarceron is a paradise. She's also the daughter of the Warden of Incarceron. She's doomed to an arranged marriage to the Queen's son. Only, this isn't her first engagement. She was originally engaged to the Queen's half son Giles (the King was married before to someone else), and original heir to the throne. Only he died, or so it seems, until Claudia gets some evidence that shows he might still actually be alive and in Incarceron. Then she finds her dads crystal to Incarceron and everything changes.

Once Finn and Claudia get those crystals they find they are able to communicate through them. And through the crystals Claudia learns from Finn that Incarceron isn't the paradise everyone makes it out to be, and Claudia learns that her father isn't the man she thought he was. Through the crystal two things become very clear to Claudia and Finn. Finn knows there is an Outside and believes he really has been there, and Claudia knows that she needs to help Finn escape, by all means possible. I loved seeing the two of them work together through the crystal to uncover the lies surrounding Incarceron. I also loved seeing the two of them grow as they learned more about the lies surrounding them. I definitely can't wait to read Sapphique and see what happens with all the lies and secrets now out in the open.

Review: Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Shadows (Lux #0.5)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Entangled
Publication Date: February 21, 2012
Pages: 179
Source: Kindle Book/Own

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review: I loved Dawson!!! I seriously loved Dawsons story! It is fantastic! I definitely like Dawson more than Daemon. He is TEN times nicer than his brothers been. He was so sweet and protective over Bethany! I loved the connection him and Bethany had even before he saved her and formed what we later know as that special connection like what Katy and Daemon have. I loved how Dawson stood up for what he wanted and didn't back down from it for anyone, even his brother. He wanted Beth and he refused to give her up over worries about the DOD! He is just amazing! And Beth! She's pretty cool too! She didn't flip out about the whole Alien thing! She accepted Dawson for who he was!

After reading Shadows though I do completely understand why Daemon is the way his is in Obsidian! It definitely made things clearer for me.

Waiting On Wednesday [#57]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Opal (Lux #3)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected Publication: December 11, 2012

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

This is a no brainer for my pick this week since the cover was revealed on Friday. Do I even have to explain why I'm excited for this?!?! More Daemon!!! Hello! Lol. Not to mention after the way Onyx ended. I seriously like need this NOW!!!! Lol.

Also, I'm looking for some Halloween themed kind of books (like books with ghosts, zombies etc.) for the month of October, and I'm looking for suggestions! Let me know what you think I should read here!

What are you waiting on this week?

New Releases September 25-October 1

Dearly, Beloved (Gone With The Respiration #2)
Author: Lia Habel
Publisher: Del Rey
Publication Date: September 25, 2012

Can the living coexist with the living dead?

That’s the question that has New Victorian society fiercely divided ever since the mysterious plague known as “The Laz” hit the city of New London and turned thousands into walking corpses. But while some of these zombies are mindless monsters, hungry for human flesh, others can still think, speak, reason, and control their ravenous new appetites.

Just ask Nora Dearly, the young lady of means who was nearly kidnapped by a band of sinister zombies but valiantly rescued by a dashing young man . . . of the dead variety.

Nora and her savior, the young zombie soldier Bram Griswold, fell hopelessly in love. But others feel only fear and loathing for the reanimated dead. Now, as tensions grow between pro- and anti-zombie factions, battle lines are being drawn in the streets. And though Bram is no longer in the New Victorian army, he and his ex-commando zombie comrades are determined to help keep the peace. That means taking a dangerous stand between The Changed, a radical group of sentient zombies fighting for survival, and The Murder, a masked squad of urban guerrillas hellbent on destroying the living dead. But zombies aren’t the only ones in danger: Their living allies are also in The Murder’s crosshairs, and for one vengeful zealot, Nora Dearly is the number one target.

As paranoia, prejudice, and terrorist attacks threaten to plunge the city into full-scale war, Nora’s scientist father and his team continue their desperate race to unlock the secrets of “The Laz” and find a cure. But their efforts may be doomed when a mysterious zombie appears bearing an entirely new strain of the virus—and the nation of New Victoria braces for a new wave of the apocalypse.

Lia Habel’s spellbinding, suspenseful sequel to Dearly, Departed takes her imaginative mash-up of period romance, futuristic thriller, and zombie drama to a whole new level of innovative and irresistible storytelling.

Alice In Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles #1)
Author: Gena Showalter
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication Date: September 25, 2012

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

Know More about Red Carpet Series Book 1: Hollywood Ever After (Paperback Giveaway)
She wasn't meant for movie stars, Hollywood, or happy endings.

Her plans for rest and relaxation are forgotten as one incredible night with Josh becomes two… And her heart begins to want him as much as her body. Will two kids, one bastard ex-husband, and Josh’s juggernaut career mean the end of their affair? Or can Claire find her happy ending after all?

About The Author:

Sasha is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, Hollywood, history, and travel. It’s no surprise that her books include a little of each. Her first play, ‘Greek Gods and Goddesses’ was written for her Girl Scout troupe. She’s been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she’s doing so. Blog Tour: Brightest Kind Of Darkness by P.T. Michelle Review + Giveaway

Amazon / Barnes & Noble

Nara Collins is an average sixteen-year-old, with one exception: every night she dreams the events of the following day. Due to an incident in her past, Nara avoids using her special gift to change fate…until she dreams a future she can’t ignore.

After Nara prevents a bombing at Blue Ridge High, her ability to see the future starts to fade, while people at school are suddenly being injured at an unusually high rate.

Grappling with her diminishing powers and the need to prevent another disaster, Nara meets Ethan Harris, a mysterious loner who seems to understand her better than anyone. Ethan and Nara forge an irresistible connection, but as their relationship heats up, so do her questions about his dark past.

Review: I really enjoyed this book! It was definitely a different, unique take on seeing the future and fate! I read it all in one afternoon! It is definitely a book you will read in one sitting (ya, its that good!) I really loved the mystery behind Nara losing her dreams for a while and not knowing why! I also loved the whole mystery behind Ethan and how he knew her so well when she had barely even talked to him before!

Nara. I really like this girl! She deals with dreams outlining the events of her next day (which gets kinda boring after a while since you always know whats going to happen). Until the day she interferes with fate to prevent a bombing at her school. Then all of a sudden after that day she starts losing her dreams and she doesn't know why! I totally felt her loss! She had these dreams every night for years and then all of a sudden they're gone? Where did they go? And how does she get them back? And how does this new guy Ethan fit into the picture and know so much about me all of a sudden?

Ethan. New guy at school. Not much of a people person. Until he starts seeing this girl Nara's dreams. Why am I able to see her dreams when they have nothing to do with darkness? Why are her dreams full of light able to get through all the darkness I absorb? How do I tell her I have her dreams without freaking her out?

I really loved the two of them getting to know each other. They understood each other, and helped each other in so many ways! They are fantastic for each other! I enjoyed seeing the two of them figure out the mystery behind why bad things were suddenly happening to people around the school and trying to help each other figure out their powers and whatnot. These two were really smart. They didn't just play dumb to everything. They might not have understood things at certain times, but they took everything seriously and when it came time to put the puzzle together all the pieces just clicked into place and revealed the problem. Now fixing the problem became a whole other issue. You see. Fate is a massive jerk. He would rather try and get rid of Nara than just let her help certain people. I loved Ethan so much! He worked so hard to protect Nara, no matter what the circumstances! And when he couldn't protect her from it, he stood by her side to help her confront it. And when she just needed someone to talk to he was there for that as well. He is seriously a fantastic guy and perfect for Nara! And his plan at the end to help Nara be able to confront Fate... Genius! I totally wouldn't have put all those pieces together and thought to do that, but Ethan is a genius and his plan worked!

I cant wait to buy myself a copy of Lucid! Because after reading BKoD I definitely need more of this series!
