Review: Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel

Dearly, Departed (Gone With The Respiration #1)
Author: Lia Habel
Publisher: Del Rey
Publication Date: October 18, 2011
Pages: 470

Love can never die.

Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?

The year is 2195. The place is New Victoria—a high-tech nation modeled on the manners, mores, and fashions of an antique era. A teenager in high society, Nora Dearly is far more interested in military history and her country’s political unrest than in tea parties and debutante balls. But after her beloved parents die, Nora is left at the mercy of her domineering aunt, a social-climbing spendthrift who has squandered the family fortune and now plans to marry her niece off for money. For Nora, no fate could be more horrible—until she’s nearly kidnapped by an army of walking corpses.

But fate is just getting started with Nora. Catapulted from her world of drawing-room civility, she’s suddenly gunning down ravenous zombies alongside mysterious black-clad commandos and confronting “The Laz,” a fatal virus that raises the dead—and hell along with them. Hardly ideal circumstances. Then Nora meets Bram Griswold, a young soldier who is brave, handsome, noble . . . and dead. But as is the case with the rest of his special undead unit, luck and modern science have enabled Bram to hold on to his mind, his manners, and his body parts. And when his bond of trust with Nora turns to tenderness, there’s no turning back. Eventually, they know, the disease will win, separating the star-crossed lovers forever. But until then, beating or not, their hearts will have what they desire.

In Dearly, Departed, romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concept of undying love.

Review: One word... AMAZING! I cant get over how much I loved this book! This was my first Zombie novel and it's set some pretty high expectations for the others I plan on reading! I loved the different points of view from this book! It gave you a look at many different angles of the same situation and I absolutely loved getting to know a little more about each character when it was being told by them (except Wolfe, I always felt like skipping his sections (although I didn't) cuz of his attitude). I also thought this whole entire thing with how the Zombies came to be infected to become that way in the first place was interesting (especially how some people tried blaming it on one specific person). I also liked learning about the Zombies, their leaders and how they came to be on different sides and what that meant. I just found it all so interesting, especially with the secrets that just kept coming out! I could not put this book down even if I wanted to!

I have to say I loved almost all the characters! Pam and Chas and Sam!  I really loved almost all of the supporting characters! But I do have to say Bram and Nora are definitely my faves! Nora. She was stubborn when she wanted to be but she was also very strong willed! She knew what she wanted and she wouldn't let people stand in her way! And Bram!!! AHHH! He makes the undead sound awesome (most of the time)! I mean, people make Zombies out to be flesh eating monsters! And while they do crave flesh they can control that and actually seem pretty normal (minus the undead part obviously), Lol! He also showed that even the undead still have hearts! I mean he took protecting Nora so seriously! He wouldn't let anything happen to her and was always there for her when she needed him! And even though he was forced not to tell her things he even came out with those at some point even if it put him in danger! He was such a gentleman! I'm so glad he ended up ok in the end! I seriously need book two like now!!! (Please! Lol. I absolutely cant wait for it!)

5 Stars!

TBR Intervention Challenge [#29]

TBR Intervention is a weekly challenge hosted by Dani@RefractedLight, Anayami@Whatever You Can Still Betray & April@Books4Juliet.

The goal of this challenge is to help each other (fellow readers and bloggers) manage our enormous and constantly growing TBR (To-Be-Read) List. The rules are simple and everyone is encouraged to participate. It does not force you to commit to more than what you can manage to read in a week or so, but participants are encouraged to read at least one book within a week. You are free to choose the book you want to read and commit to this challenge. You may post your entry every Saturday, at the frequency of your choice--EVERY WEEK or EVERY TWO WEEKS. However, we will sponsor this event regularly every Saturday.

Here are the rules:

1. Post the book(s) you committed to read in your last TBR Intervention post and tell us something about it. Did you finish it? Did you enjoy it or not? Post the link to your review (if you have one).

2. Post a book that you want to read and already own. Pick something that has been sitting on your shelf for too long now (6 months or longer). Commit to read the book in the next couple of days or week.

3. Grab the TBR Intervention Button and post it on your blog sidebar so you will be constantly reminded of the challenge, making it easier for you to commit. This will also encourage other readers/bloggers/visitors to join the challenge.

4. Add the link to your post in the Linky below and make sure to visit the other blogs. Comment, encourage, and spread the love to our fellow readers.

Last weeks TBR book:
Dearly, Departed (Gone With The Respiration #1)
Author: Lia Habel

I really really enjoyed this!!!! I loved the different points of view, oh, and I especially loved all the things that we find out along the way that surprised you. I couldnt put it down! I dont have my review written yet but I will hopefully a little later! Or tomorrow at the latest (but I'm pretty sure I'll write it tonight once I'm done with the things I'm doing).

This week I'm committing to read:
Struck (Struck #1)
Author: Jennifer Bosworth

Summary from Goodreads:
Mia Price is a lightning addict. She's survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn't who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.

So I've been getting behind on my NetGalley review books so I'm hoping to read two or three of them this week! So this one is coming out May 8th and I wanna have it read in time to post a review that day (I also plan on reading Of Poseidon by Anna Banks this week because it is also being released in May and like I said, I'm behind). I've also been really excited to read this so I cant wait to get into it.

Follow Friday [#37]

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Its a way to get out there and meet new bloggers and discover new blogs. :)

Q. Have you had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then "broke up" with later on in either the series or a stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her?

Stefan from The Vampire Diaries! I was really on your Team in the beginning! I loved you and Elena together, but it was like after your first mistake that Damon was there to clean up I couldn't look at you the same anymore. Now your brother officially owns my heart! TEAM DAMON!!

TGIF is hosted by Ginger at GReads. There's a weekly question and then we do a re-cap of the weeks posts.

Q. Reading Blues: We all get them from time to time. What helps you overcome those reading slumps when nothing seems to grab your attention?

Idk. I usually either just come out of them on my own or I just pick up a book I've been really wanting to read, even if means putting a few other aside.

Weekly Recap:

Review: Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs

Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1)
Author: Tera Lynn Childs
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: September 6, 2011
Pages: 345
Source: Hardcover/Library

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

Review: I really enjoyed this! I love books that are retelling's or based on myths (preferably Greek ones but I'm not picky)! This book had me pulled in from the beginning! I thought the writing was fantastic! I loved getting to know each of the girls! Though I wish we could have had a little more Greer, I feel like we only know the basics with her right now. I also liked how each of the girls had a different reaction to learning what they were. Grace handled it, well, with Grace. Lol. She didn't flip out when she found out, she just put the pieces together and realized that with all the things going on it made sense that she would be this. Greer on the other hand... She did all kinds of flipping out. I mean yeah I get it, its really odd that two people that look exactly like you show up on your doorstep and say your descendents of Medusa. I'd find that extremely weird. But when she really thought about it, it made sense. I mean, you cant deny the facts no matter how badly you want to. Especially the seeing monsters and your sisters looking just like you bit! That's really hard to deny! I did think that Gretchen and Grace could have handled talking to Greer about it differently though! Lol. I'm glad the three of them came together in the end though!

I really wanna know about this whole thing about the girls being the Key Generation! I wanna learn more about it and what exactly it means for them, besides monsters hunting them for a bounty and what not. I also wanna know just who exactly put the bounty on the girls heads, and who is the other person helping them and saving them at the end with the call??? Ahhhh, there's so much more I need to know!! Now, I cant help but mention the boys. I was laughing so hard at Nick sometimes! Gretchen made it painfully clear she wanted nothing to do with him but yet he still tried so hard. That boy would not give up! Though I do wanna know why Gretchen's hypnosis didn't work on him. I thought that was interesting with him being the only one it hasn't worked on yet. Milo! I thought how Grace and Milo acted around each other was so dang cute! I mean, they made it painfully obvious that they liked each other yet neither of them had the guts to make a move until way later in the book. (I want more Grace & Milo moments!) And like I said, we didn't see enough of Greer yet for me form an opinion of her boy.

Review: The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1)
Author: Julie Kagawa
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication Date: April 24, 2012
Pages: 504
Source: Galley from NetGalley

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

Review: OMG!! This book is seriously good!!! I stayed up til almost one in the morning reading this because I couldn't put it down! This is the best book I've read so far this year hands down! This is also hands down the best vampire book I've read (and I've read quite a few)! I loved how this took dystopian and put a whole new spin on it with the vampires! The whole idea of the vampires ruling and the humans either being forced to be blood cattle or unregistereds was really interesting and unique compared to the normal vampire stories (you know, vampires living among the humans, just killing them when they needed blood etc..)! And don't even get me started on the Rabids! The humans that failed to turn into Vampires, just being rabid, crazed animals, forever filled with the hunger, attacking anything that moves pretty much! I could seriously feel Allie & the other humans fear whenever Rabids were around! I could really feel Allie's emotions throughout the entire book, not to mention I could clearly picture everything that was happening throughout the entire book! It was written that well!

I really felt for Allie! She seriously despised vampires and then after being attacked she was forced to become one or die! I mean, I would have done the same thing in her place but I really felt for her. Becoming something you hate. Not to mention she was forced out on her own not long after becoming one! Man, she just couldn't catch a break! Now Zeke and the group... I really liked them... err... well, most of them. Lol. They took her in when she had no idea where to go and treated her like a part of their little family, until they learned what she was. It really annoyed me that everyone would flip out on her after learning what she was! I mean her actions proved that she wasn't like the vampires Jeb described (which was how some other vamps did act in the book) but they wouldn't see it! Have we ever heard the phase "Action speaks louder...?" I'm pretty sure her actions showed she wasn't like the stereotype people thought about vampires. And I'm glad that by the end of the book many of them realized that! I was really happy when Zeke decided to trust her and let her help him and everyone else when they needed it! I definitely cant wait for the next book, to see where the story goes next!

5 Stars!

Social Suicide (Deadly Cool #2)
Author: Gemma Halliday
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: April 24, 2012

Twittercide [twit-er-sahyd]: the killing of one human being by another while the victim is in the act of tweeting.

Call me crazy, but I figured writing for the Herbert Hoover High Homepage would be a pretty sweet gig. Pad the resume for college applications, get a first look at the gossip column, spend some time ogling the paper’s brooding bad-boy editor, Chase Erikson. But on my first big story, things went... a little south. What should have been a normal interview with Sydney Sanders turned into me discovering the Homecoming Queen-hopeful dead in her pool. Electrocuted while Tweeting. Now, in addition to developing a reputation as HHH’s resident body finder, I’m stuck trying to prove that Sydney’s death wasn’t suicide.

I’m starting to long for the days when my biggest worry was whether the cafeteria was serving pizza sticks or Tuesday Tacos...

Review: My Soul To Keep by Rachel Vincent

My Soul To Keep (Soul Screamers #3)
Author: Rachel Vincent
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication Date: June 1, 2010
Pages: 296
Source: Kindle Book/Own

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.Until something does.Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked. And so is someone else…

Review: I enjoyed this! I really liked how this book focused more on a problem with Demon's Breath! I really wanted to learn more about it from when we were introduced to it in the previous book and I'm glad this book dove into it more! I was really fascinated with trying to figure out how Demon's Breath was getting into the hands of humans! I really couldn't figure much out until the pieces to figuring it out were like thrown at you. But then when they threw it at you things clicked! Everything just started making sense then! I felt really bad for Kaylee, she tried really hard to help her friends, errr, Nash's friends. Lol. She tried to keep others from getting hooked but she ended up being too late! I really though she should have told the adults right away but we all know Kaylee! She wants to try to fix things herself first! Lol.

Nash... He was just all over the place in this book! I mean at the end we find out why but I was getting so annoyed with him at times! I mean, at times he was being an amazing boyfriend and then at others he was being a massive jerk. Lets just say I started suspecting what was wrong with him long before it was revealed just based on how he was acting. Due to that, I found myself wanting more Tod moments. He seemed to be more willing to help than Nash was at times, not to mention even he was being a lot nicer than Nash at times too. He also seemed to feel a lot worse when he messed up in this book too than Nash. I just felt like overall we were starting to see the true colors of both brothers at points. I must say though, I'm glad most people made it out ok in the end, thanks to Tod being a big help to Kaylee! :)

TBR Intervention Challenge [#28]

I've been really busy this week so I haven't finished this yet. But I am about a fourth of the way through it and so far I'm really enjoying it! I'll definitely have it finished for next week!

TGIF #36

TGIF is hosted by Ginger at GReads. There's a weekly question and then we do a re-cap of the weeks posts.

Q. Book Blogger Influences: Has there been a particular book blogger who's influenced what you read? Share with us a review/book blog that convinced you to pick up a certain book!

Well. First of all, theres my FBBFF's (the girls from Starbooks!) which includes a few people I know many of you know (April @ Books4Juliet, Kristin @ Better Read Than Dead & Angela @ Reading Angel). These girls have influenced me to read so many books, but there's a select few I definitely I wanna mention. So, they would talk about the Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout (you know, Half-Blood & Pure) & the Soul Screamers Series by Rachel Vincent (which if you'll notice on the side, I'm currently reading the 4th book in the series). I honestly had no intention of reading either of those series for a while until I read about how much they enjoyed them! I couldn't believe I thought about putting them off after starting both series though! Lol

Also, Anna @ Literary Exploration has a big influence on what I read! I've noticed that me and her have very similar tastes in books so I generally trust any book recommendations she gives but one that made me need to get the book asap was when she was raving about Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday. Again, I had no intention of reading this book anytime soon until I saw one of Anna's IMM posts where she had got Social Suicide in for review and she was just talking about how excited she was to read it because of how much she loved Deadly Cool. I decided after seeing that to go and pick up Deadly Cool from the library. Again, I ended up loving this book, its another one I couldn't believe I thought about putting off!

Waiting On Wednesday [#35]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

A Want So Wicked (A Need So Beautiful #2)
Author: Suzanne Young
Expected Publication: June 26, 2012

Elise is a normal seventeen-year-old girl until the day she wakes up in a desert park, with no idea who she is.

After that episode, her life takes a bizarre turn. She’s experiencing unexpected flashes of insight into people’s lives—people she’s never met before. Strangers frighten her with warnings about the approaching Shadows. And although Elise has never had a boyfriend, she suddenly finds herself torn between two handsome but very different young men: Abe, the charming bad boy whose affect on her both seduces and frightens her, and the mysterious Harlin, who’s new to town but with whom Elise feels an urgent, elemental connection—almost as if they are soul mates.

Now Elise begins to question everything about her life. Why do these guys both want her so desperately? What are the Shadows? Why does the name Charlotte inspire a terrifying familiarity? And who is Elise, really?

I really enjoyed A Need So Beautiful! It was so unique and breathtaking and I love the way Suzanne Young writes! I cant wait to see where she takes the story in A Want So Wicked!
