Waiting On Wednesday [#85]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

3:59
Author: Gretchen McNeil
Expected Publication: September 17, 2013

Josie Byrne's life is spiraling out of control. Her parents are divorcing, her boyfriend Nick has grown distant, and her physics teacher has it in for her. When she's betrayed by the two people she trusts most, Josie thinks things can't get worse.

Until she starts having dreams about a girl named Jo. Every night at the same time—3:59 a.m.

Jo's life is everything Josie wants: she's popular, her parents are happily married, and Nick adores her. It all seems real, but they're just dreams, right? Josie thinks so, until she wakes one night to a shadowy image of herself in the bedroom mirror – Jo.

Josie and Jo realize that they are doppelgängers living in parallel universes that overlap every twelve hours at exactly 3:59. Fascinated by Jo's perfect world, Josie jumps at the chance to jump through the portal and switch places for a day.

But Jo’s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo's boyfriend, he hates her. Jo's mom is missing, possibly insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.

By the end of the day, Josie is desperate to return to her own life. But there’s a problem: Jo has sealed the portal, trapping Josie in this dangerous world. Can she figure out a way home before it’s too late?

From master of suspense Gretchen McNeil comes a riveting and deliciously eerie story about the lives we wish we had – and how they just might kill you.

This book sounds really good! Doppelgängers, parallel universes! You cant tell me this doesnt sound awesome! I'm so excited for September! Definitely cant wait to get my hands on this when it comes out!

Review: With All My Soul by Rachel Vincent

With All My Soul (Soul Screamers #7)
Author: Rachel Vincent
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication Date: March 26, 2013
Pages: 377
Source: Paperback/Library

What does it mean when your school is voted the most dangerous in America? It's time to kick some hellion butt...

After not really surviving her junior year (does "undead" count as survival?), Kaylee Cavanaugh has vowed to take back her school from the hellions causing all the trouble. She's going to find a way to turn the incarnations of Avarice, Envy and Vanity against one another in order to protect her friends and finish this war, once and forever.

But then she meets Wrath and understands that she's closer to the edge than she's ever been. And when one more person close to her is taken, Kaylee realizes she can't save everyone she loves without risking everything she has....

*Contains spoilers to previous book (Before I Wake)*

Review: I think this is a fantastic ending to the series! Though I have to admit, I'm so sad to see it go! This is one of my fave series and even though it had a great ending I'm so sad there isn't going to be anymore books in the series!!! Anyways! I thought we had seen the worst of everything in Before I Wake but there is definitely some things in With All My Soul that even topped those events. This book just sent your emotions on a roller coaster! One minute you were happy, the next scared, then angry, then in tears. I was actually brought to tears at one point in this book!!! It seriously happened. I haven't cried over a scene in a book in a while but this book brought it out of me.

So I wanna start with the Hellions. I swear, they will stop at nothing to get Kaylee's soul! Even if that means yet again, taking her dad. Seriously. Doesn't taking the same person over and over again get old? Honestly. This time though, they made it epically hard to get him back. Kaylee and everyone attempted a rescue mission; which only ended in some people getting hurt and unable to travel back between worlds. Which then created another problem! Not only did the Hellions have Kaylee's dad but they also were after those who got stuck. Luckily, those people did a fantastic job at hiding from the Hellions. Though that didn't help Kaylee and everyone find them either. That was kinda a lose/win/lose situation. Now what I kinda saw coming. Well, obviously we saw those dang Hellions taking over other peoples bodies yet again to talk to Kaylee. So it doesn't shock me anymore. What I didn't see coming; Ira, the Hellion of Wrath. I really didn't get why he got involved in this for a while. I was definitely blindsided by his showing up since he hasn't up until this book. Though he definitely played a unique role in everything!

So where to start with the group. Easiest first I guess. I was really happy to see Nash moving on with Sabine. After all that trying to get Kaylee back and failing he finally realized he wasn't meant to be with her. He was still a great friend to her and still cared a whole lot about her but he did move on. I'm proud of him for that! Emma. Omgosh!!! I felt so bad for her. She had to adjust to living in Lydia's body; which was not easy for her at all. First of all, only Kaylee and the group knew she was actually still there, so she had to go to her own funeral and even see her family while they all thought she was dead. That was so hard on Emma. Then on top of that, being in Lydia's body gave Emma all of Lydia's syphon abilities. So she had to learn to control that as well. That poor girl just could not get a break. Now on to Sophie. So we found out that she does have half the bean sidhe heritage in her, but only just half. She has the bean sidhe wail and can cross over, but she cant scream for souls. I thought that was very interesting. On the brightside, she wasn't being so ignorant and bratty in this book. That's a step up right?? We also learned that Kaylee's dad and mom were soulmates. Like legit soulmates. They each had a piece of each others soul. So there's a whole story around that as well. And last but not least Uncle Brendon and Nash's mom Harmony. So they start dating in this book. I really did not see that one coming. But I totally have to admit, SO CUTE!!!!!  There was just so much that happened, and so much that was revealed in this book that I'm still wrapping my head around it.

The last few chapters. Man. My heart was breaking so much! I cried during them! Kaylee... What she did... I cant imagine how hard it must have been for her to do that. Though I did love how she managed that little deal with Ira. That was great! A few of those chapters though were so hard to read. I just cant even put into words the ending. You have to read it for yourself to understand the roller coaster of emotions. But overall, it was a very satisfying ending (after the crying).

5 Stars!

Review: Uses for Boys by Erica Lorraine Scheidt

Uses For Boys
Author: Erica Lorraine Scheidt
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: January 15, 2013
Pages: 240
Source: Paperback/Library

Anna remembers a time before boys, when she was little and everything made sense. When she and her mom were a family, just the two of them against the world. But now her mom is gone most of the time, chasing the next marriage, bringing home the next stepfather. Anna is left on her own—until she discovers that she can make boys her family. From Desmond to Joey, Todd to Sam, Anna learns that if you give boys what they want, you can get what you need. But the price is high—the other kids make fun of her; the girls call her a slut. Anna's new friend, Toy, seems to have found a way around the loneliness, but Toy has her own secrets that even Anna can't know.

Then comes Sam. When Anna actually meets a boy who is more than just useful, whose family eats dinner together, laughs, and tells stories, the truth about love becomes clear. And she finally learns how it feels to have something to lose—and something to offer. Real, shocking, uplifting, and stunningly lyrical,  Uses for Boys  is a story of breaking down and growing up.

Review:  I'm gonna be honest. This book really wasn't my cup of tea. So lets start with the cover. Many people have stated this already but I feel the need to restate it, don't let the cover fool you! This book is not cute like the cover misleads you to believe. My first problem with this book is that I felt like all it was talking about was sex. Now as everyone knows, I don't have a problem with sex in YA books, as long as its in moderation. Honestly, I've even read some adult books that had more moderation than this. I felt like 90% of the book was sex. And that got on my nerves really fast. I felt like this book was severely underdeveloped. There was much more potential for this book but it just never happened. The author had a great idea for where she wanted to go with the book but it just never got there.

So the main character dealt with an abandonment issue. Hence why she turns to guys and sex to feel loved and wanted. I honestly felt like all of this was immature. I mean Anna is made out to be all innocent and unknowing about sex in the beginning and then not to long after she's completely sexually active. And at that she was 14! I mean I know some people have had sex that young but I felt like it just went right along with the immature problem I had with the book! On top of that I felt like the entire book was rushed! I mean we kept going up in age every like 5 chapters. And most chapters weren't that long as it was.

The only part of the book that I did feel was dealt with in a mature way was Anna's abortion at 16. That wasn't just a split second decision for Anna. She actually thought about it and decided that was the best option for her. This issue I felt was dealt with in a mature way and I was glad for that. But this and the slight change in Anna's maturity afterwards was not enough to change my overall rating of the book. It would need some overall improvement in story development for me to like it more. Like I said. This book just wasn't my cup tea.

Waiting On Wednesday [#83]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Golden
Author: Jessi Kirby
Expected Publication: May 14, 2013

Love, tragedy, and mystery converge in this compelling novel from “an author to watch” (Booklist).

Seventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.

Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.

Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference.

I am just really looking forward to this book! It sounds really good! :)

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Review: Prom & Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg

Prom & Prejudice
Author: Elizabeth Eulberg
Publisher: Point
Publication Date: January 4, 2011
Pages: 231
Source: Paperback/Library

From the much-buzzed-about author of THE LONELY HEARTS CLUB (already blurbed by Stephenie Meyer, Lauren Myracle, and Jen Calonita), a prom-season delight of Jane Austen proportions.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl of high standing at Longbourn Academy must be in want of a prom date.

After winter break, the girls at the very prestigious Longbourn Academy become obsessed with the prom. Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn't interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be - especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London.

Lizzie is happy about her friend's burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles's friend, Will Darcy, who's snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn't seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it's because her family doesn't have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk - so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?

Review: I really loved this book. Ok, so I've never actually read Pride and Prejudice (I know, so bad right?) so I don't know exactly how it relates (though I think I get the general idea of it). So this book was so good! It the first Elizabeth Eulberg book I've read (though I have all her other books just waiting to be read on my shelf now) and I totally love her writing! So overall I really loved the idea of the story. Lizzie a scholarship girl in a school where money means everything. Due to that, most of the people at her school don't exactly treat her all that well. They seriously treat her like the plague! I mean like the girls at her school purposely went out of their way to make her life a living hell. And the boys from the boys school next door don't exactly treat her any better. So when one of those boys even shows a small amount of interest in her she doesn't think he's for real.

I loved the message I got out of the book. Ok. So pretty much everyone in this book was judged based on how much money their families had. And Lizzie being the scholarship girl was pretty much at the bottom, making it harder than ever to fit in. Now I know lots of us have dealt with bullies but these girls just took it to all new levels. They seriously acted like they were better than everyone just because their families had tons of money! So I completely understood why Lizzie was standoffish when Darcy showed any interest in her. When almost every other person treated her like trash, why should she believe he's any different? I mean people have been known to fake being friendly or interested in you just to get close to you and then just do something absolutely horrible to you. But then again, people also deserve the chance to not be judged right when you meet them. I felt like that was the first massive problem between Lizzie and Darcy. Darcy just judged Lizzie (based on an incident that we don't find out about til way later in the book) based solely on her being a scholarship student and then Lizzie just judged Darcy by the way he acted after he found out about it... Which is how everyone else treated her pretty much. Judging someone when you first meet them is never the best thing. I mean I know it still happens but still.

This thing with Lizzie and Darcy! It totally just started out with the both of them just accompanying their friends places and it turned into this huge thing that they themselves just couldn't see (mostly Lizzie, but still). The little bits of flirtation here and there. His showing up in her life tons (like walking her home after work). Lizzie really didn't wanna admit it but there was something between them, she just didn't want to end up getting hurt or used by a rich guy. I do have to say though. Darcy is ten times better than Wick! I just immediately got this strange feeling about Wick. Something about him felt off and I just didn't like Lizzie's friendship with him. After Darcy told her about what Wick had done after their huge face off I knew I was right to have those feelings about him. He was not a good guy and even though it took a huge fight between Lizzie and Darcy for him to open up to her about what Wick did to his family (which also explained his aversion to Lizzie after finding out she was a scholarship student) I was glad it came out! I had wondered why Darcy didn't like him and I just knew Wick was lying about why. I also hated that Wick said they had to take advantage of their situations. Um. No. They didn't. Yes, Lizzie could take advantage of her scholarship and get a good education, but I knew Wick was all kinds of wrong with the way he said "take advantage." The take advantage he was talking about was using people for all kinds of different things, and I don't care how rich or poor you are, you should not be using people like that. I'm glad Lizzie finally found out the truth about Wick! And I'm very glad she realized her feelings for Darcy!!! :D

I did however dislike the pain that was caused in Jane's life because of Lizzie and Darcy. Jane had this incredible relationship with Charles and his sister got all jealous of Lizzie and Darcy and took it out on Jane instead of Lizzie! She told him to break up with Jane just to try and keep Lizzie and Darcy away from each other on their outings and it was just horrible. I was so glad that Darcy talked some sense into Charles and got him to apologize for treating Jane like trash because of his sisters jealousy! Jane totally deserved her happy ending!

So I loved the ending! From Darcy and Lizzie taking down Wick when he tried taking advantage of Jane's sister to the absolutely adorable "will you not go to prom with me and let me take you on date instead?" thing... It was great! Wick finally got what was coming to him and Lizzie got her happy ending with Darcy! Such a good ending! Oh, and the moral of this story is not to judge anyone! Give them a chance! :)

Review: Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Apollyon (Covenant #4)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Pages: 360

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

Review: Ok, so I really enjoyed Apollyon!! It sets us up for a fantastic finale in Sentinel! Ya. I'm totally gonna spoil something right in the beginning of this review but I will be unable to review this properly unless I tell. So Alex struggled with the connection with Seth for sometime but she did eventually break it. But if you kinda read into the blurb up there you kinda figure it out anyways because Alex wouldn't be doing certain things mentioned in the last part of it if she still was. So YAY!!! But Seth still found a way to get in her head which annoyed me to death. Why couldn't he just let her have a little peace???

So Alex and Aiden dealt with some serious stuff in this book. They go down to the Underworld searching for the one person who can give them answers on stopping Seth. They end up in some interesting circumstances. I was totally scared for them to go into the Underworld, but it wasn't actually half as scary as I thought it would be for them. I was actually more scared for them at the gate to the underworld than actually in the underworld just because they dealt with the hardest things at the gate. And of course, after they talk to the person who can tell them how to stop Seth they found out the answer is exactly what they don't want Alex to have to do! Cant say that was shocking, I was half expecting that anyways.

I think what I enjoyed most though about the book was how the gods kept popping up all the time. We expected Apollo being that Alex is of his bloodline, but we saw a few others pop up that didnt appear in previous books. It really showed how divided the god were. Some were on Alex's side, helping out the good guys and some sided with Lucian and Seth and whatever god he's descended from helping the bad side. I thought it was kinda funny that the gods didnt want Seth becoming the god killer but yet some were supporting his side. I mean we find out why at the very end, due to the god which I'm thinking is the one Seth is descended from (but I'm still not 100% sure), but still. I do understand though because the god (I'm not telling which one) is a pretty scary god.

The ending! WOW! The group finds their way to Covenant up in South Dakota I think it is (sorry, I dont have my ARC with me so I cant look it up) to find the road literally littered with the burnt cars of those who tried to escape to there from the New York Covenant. That made me so sad! And then finding out what caused that! Man, that just sucked! And even worse was finding out Alex's lest favorite teacher made it there too, but was perfectly fine! UGH! And then the god (still not spilling, LOL) and Alex fighting and what happens to her!!! Can I please have Sentinel???? I really wanna know what happens!!!
