Waiting On Wednesday [#62]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

The Madness Underneath (Shades of London #2)
Author: Maureen Johnson
Expected Publication: February 26, 2013

After her near-fatal run-in with the Jack the Ripper copycat, Rory Devereaux has been living in Bristol under the close watch of her parents. So when her therapist suddenly suggests she return to Wexford, Rory jumps at the chance. But Rory's brush with the Ripper touched her more than she thought possible: she's become a human terminus, with the power to eliminate ghosts on contact. She soon finds out that the Shades— the city's secret ghost-fighting police—are responsible for her return. The Ripper may be gone, but now there is a string of new inexplicable deaths threatening London. Rory has evidence that the deaths are no coincidence. Something much more sinister is going on, and now she must convince the squad to listen to her before it's too late.

In this follow-up to the Edgar Award-nominated The Name of the Star, Maureen Johnson adds another layer of spectacularly gruesome details to the streets of London that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

I loved The Name of The Star!!!! It was a fantastic read! I am so so so excited for it's sequel!!! Definitely can't wait to read more about Rory!!!

Just For Now (Sea Breeze #4)
Author: Abbi Glines
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Publication Date: October 30, 2012

The day Preston Drake figured out that wealthy women paid well for a set of tight abs and a pretty face his life turned around.

The run down rat-infested trailer he had shared with his alcoholic mother and three younger siblings was now only a place he visited to pay the bills and stock the pantry with food.

He no longer worried about his family starving or living without electricity. The money he made entertaining rich older women more than covered his family’s needs and his own. He had it all figured out. Except…

There was this girl.

She was as innocent as he was tainted.

Amanda Hardy wished her knees didn’t get weak when Preston walked into a room. She hated the fact her heart raced when he flashed his smile in her direction. He had a different girl in his bed every night. He was the kind of boy a smart girl ran from. So, why was she coming up with ways to get close to him? Even when it was obvious he wanted to keep her at a distance.

Maybe her heart knew something the world didn’t. Maybe Preston Drake was more than just a pretty face.

Rebel Heart (Dust Lands #2)
Author: Moira Young
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry
Publication Date: October 30, 2012

Nothing is certain and no one is safe in the second book in the highly praised Dust Lands trilogy, which MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog called “better than The Hunger Games.”

It seemed so simple: Defeat the Tonton, rescue her kidnapped brother, Lugh, and then order would be restored to Saba’s world. Simplicity, however, has proved to be elusive. Now, Saba and her family travel west, headed for a better life and a longed-for reunion with Jack. But the fight for Lugh’s freedom has unleashed a new power in the dust lands, and a formidable new enemy is on the rise.

What is the truth about Jack? And how far will Saba go to get what she wants? In this much-anticipated follow-up to the riveting Blood Red Road, a fierce heroine finds herself at the crossroads of danger and destiny, betrayal and passion.

Review: Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

Something Strange and Deadly (Something Strange and Deadly #1)
Author: Susan Dennard
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: July 24, 2012
Pages: 388
Source: Hardcover/Library

The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

Review: I really enjoyed this book!!! It wasn't what I was expecting, it ended up being better than what I expected. I was expecting a zombie novel. Not a zombie novel where the zombies are under the control of a necromancer. That definitely put an interesting twist on it and I loved it! I do have to say once I learned some key facts though when reading I did find the book a bit predictable.

Eleanor. This girl had a ton on her plate. Waiting for her brother to finally come home, a very rude and seemly uncaring mother constantly getting on her case, a guy courting her which she had no idea what to do about and she was working with people that nobody really liked. I really hated Eleanor's mother. She used up the family's money and now she's pushing Eleanor to get herself a guy real quick and get married to get the money back. She didnt care about what Eleanor thought or wanted, she just cared about money. I was really happy that Eleanor kept going against her mom. Her mom kind of deserved it for what she was doing to her daughter. I also felt for her because she missed her brother and she didnt know what happened to him for the longest time. And then she had Clarence courting her, which was kinda odd seeing as their families had a falling out a while back. But apparently he was doing it to make up for the wrongs done to her family. Which lightened me up a little on him because hey, he was trying to make up for something bad their parents had started.

The Spirit-Hunters! They tried so hard to do the right thing and help the people of Philadelphia and protect them from the walking dead but all they got was hate. And then on top of that, somehow they got blamed for everything bad that happened and that totally wasn't fair to them. I have to say my fave Spirit-Hunter was Daniel! I really enjoyed how he and Eleanor had this like love/hate relationship. I mean one time thy would get along, the next they were fighting. I'm glad they came to their senses at the end though! I was also glad they let Eleanor help in their hunt for the necromancer.

The necromancer. Now I was stumped about who it could be at the beginning, but as certain things started getting revealed I was able to guess who the necromancer was and I was right! Now of course I'm not gonna spoil it and tell you who it is! I was shocked though with what happened at the very end though with the necromancer. That was unexpected for me. And I feel so bad that Eleanor lost one of her hands in the end. I really cant wait for the next book!

4 Stars!

Blurb:
A stalker ghost, misguided Seers, and spellbinding wraiths—Amelia Ashley has faced them all. Now her greatest hope is to spend the rest of her afterlife with her living boyfriend, Joshua. Amelia fears she might really be doomed, until the forces of light give her another option. She can join them in their quest to gather souls, with a catch: Once she joins them, she can never see Joshua again.

Faced with impossible choices, Amelia decides to take her afterlife into her own hands—and fight back.

I really like this cover as well!!! It definitely goes well with the other covers in the series! I haven't read the first two books yet but I'm hoping to sometime in the near future! Elegy's expected publication is July 4, 2013!

Blurb:
After accidentally unleashing the gods from their captivity on Olympus, Helen must find a way to re-imprison them without starting a devastating war. But the gods are angry, and their thirst for blood already has a body count.

To make matters worse, the Oracle reveals that a diabolical Tyrant is lurking among them, which drives a wedge between the once-solid group of friends. As the gods use the Scions against one another, Lucas’s life hangs in the balance. Still unsure whether she loves him or Orion, Helen is forced to make a terrifying decision, for war is coming to her shores.

In Josephine Angelini’s compelling conclusion to the masterfully woven Starcrossed trilogy, a goddess must rise above it all to change a destiny that’s been written in the stars. With worlds built just as fast as they crumble, love and war collide in an all-out battle that will leave no question unanswered and no heart untouched.

I also love this cover!!! The colors are fantastic! And it as well goes good with the other covers in its series! I also haven't started this series yet but I hope to soon! Goddess's expected publication is May 28, 2013!

Let me know your thoughts on all three awesome covers!

Cover Reveal: Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins

Blurb from Goodreads:
Anna Whitt, daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a claim. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

OMGosh!!!! I love love love this cover!!!! It is so freaking beautiful!!! I am so excited for Sweet Peril! I loved Sweet Evil so much so I am sooooooooooo excited for this!!! Sweet Peril's expected publication is April 30, 2013

Review: Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry

Rot & Ruin (Benny Imura #1)
Author: Jonathan Maberry
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Publication Date: September 14, 2010
Pages: 458
Source: Paperback/Library

In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human.

Review: I don't know what it was about this book but I just didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I didn't really find it that interesting until closer to the end. I seriously found the first half of the book boring. It was like Benny: "I hate Zoms!" "They took my parents from me!" "I also hate Tom, he didn't fight to save our parents, instead he ran away." And then he was like "I don't wanna have to get a job, I'm only doing it because I have to." Honestly, I felt like he was just complaining throughout the first half of the book. It got really annoying to read.

I started liking the book when Benny and Tom went looking for Nix after she was taken. Benny finally started acting more mature when they did that and I started enjoying the book more because of it. I also enjoyed the fact that he finally let Tom explain things to him and that he finally understood why Tom took him and ran. I am also happy that Nix and Benny finally made their feelings for each other obvious. I took them almost the entire book! I'm also glad that Tom ended up being ok after he fell into the horde of Zombies and that thanks to his help they took down Charlie Pink-Eye and his accomplices at Gameland. I am definitely curious about the plane they saw though. So I will be reading the next book.

Waiting On Wednesday [#61]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This Is What Happy Looks Like
Author: Jennifer E. Smith
Expected Publication: April 2, 2013

If fate sent you an email, would you answer?

In This is What Happy Looks Like, Jennifer E. Smith's new YA novel, perfect strangers Graham Larkin and Ellie O'Neill meet—albeit virtually—when Graham accidentally sends Ellie an email about his pet pig, Wilbur. In the tradition of romantic movies like "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle," the two 17-year-olds strike up an email relationship, even though they live on opposite sides of the country and don't even know each other's first names.

Through a series of funny and poignant messages, Graham and Ellie make a true connection, sharing intimate details about their lives, hopes and fears. But they don't tell each other everything; Graham doesn't know the major secret hidden in Ellie's family tree, and Ellie is innocently unaware that Graham is actually a world-famous teen actor living in Los Angeles.

When the location for the shoot of Graham's new film falls through, he sees an opportunity to take their relationship from online to in-person, managing to get the production relocated to picturesque Henley, Maine, where Ellie lives. But can a star as famous as Graham have a real relationship with an ordinary girl like Ellie? And why does Ellie's mom want her to avoid the media's spotlight at all costs?

Just as they did in The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, the hands of fate intervene in wondrous ways in this YA novel that delivers on high concept romance in lush and thoughtful prose.

I am so excited for this! I loved The Statistical Probability of Love At First Sight so much! It was so cute and well written! I'm really looking forward to reading more of Ms. Smith's writing! And this book just sounds fantastic! And I love the cover!

Review: 34 Pieces of You by Carmen Rodrigues

34 Pieces of You
Author: Carmen Rodrigues
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Publication Date: September 4, 2012
Pages: 336
Source: ARC/Borrowed

A dark and moving novel—reminiscent of Thirteen Reasons Why—about the mystery surrounding a teenage girl’s fatal overdose.

There was something about Ellie... Something dangerous. Charismatic. Broken. Jake looked out for her. Sarah followed her lead. And Jess kept her distance, and kept watch.

Now Ellie’s dead, and Jake, Sarah, and Jess are left to pick up the pieces. All they have are 34 clues she left behind. 34 strips of paper hidden in a box beneath her bed. 34 secrets of a brief and painful life.

Jake, Sarah, and Jess all feel responsible for what happened to Ellie, and all three have secrets of their own. As they begin to confront the darkest truths about themselves, they will also find out what Ellie herself had been hiding all along....

Review: I really enjoyed this book! So as everyone knows I was a huge fan of Thirteen Reasons Why, so when it said reminiscent of Thirteen Reasons Why in the description I knew it was a book I'd have to read! I really liked how this book would switch between Sarah, Jake & Jess's points of view and share each of their stories about Before and After Ellie died. I also loved how when one of their stories intersected with anothers they'd continue it in the other persons POV when the other ones finished. We got to see certain situations from multiple perspectives and I really liked that, especially since some of them were about secrets about that other person. I also liked that with each different person we got to see different sides of Ellie when she was with those people and what she would tell each of them and hide from the others. It really showed you just how much she was hiding from those different people in her life.

I wanna start with Jess. She really wasn't that close to Ellie at first. Everything changed though the night that Lola made fun of Jess for being 15 but never having been kissed. Because that night after Lola left, Ellie kissed Jess and things were never the same again. After that Jess began to question her sexuality. She saw Ellie a lot more, and they had this secret relationship no one else knew about. Jess and Ellie kept this secret until Ellie's death. Nobody really understood how much Jess was hurting after Ellie's death because of that secret. So Jess grieved when no one else was around to know. Ellie opened up something inside of Jess, that even Jess herself had never known was there, and she wont ever soon forget how Ellie changed her life with that. It also hit Jess hard because not soon before Ellie died, she found out about Ellie experimenting with the pills and even cutting herself, but Jess couldn't get through to her and Ellie wouldn't really open up about why she was doing that.

Jake. Man I felt so bad for him. Ellie is his sister. He felt like it was his fault that she died. She had called him upset the night before wanting him to come home right away because she needed him, but he blew that off until the next day. So by the time he finally got home Ellie had already overdosed. He felt like if he would have come home sooner like he promised he would that she might not have done it then. He was living with that guilt. And then on top of that, Sarah had tried to overdose with Ellie and he had a hard time with that because he wanted to help her, he wanted to be there for her but he didnt know how because he's been hiding for the longest time that he's in love with her. And he doesnt know how to deal with those feelings and help her at the same time. It's also hard for him to help with her grief over Ellie's death when he's still struggling with his own grief over it. I was glad he really started seeing her and trying to just be there for her in the end, when she really needed it.

Sarah. Out of everybody in the group it affected her the hardest. She was Ellie's best friend. I mean come on, they even tried to overdose together. They were really close. They always spent time together, and they had secrets between each other that no one else knew as well. And Sarah could tell there was something wrong because of the way Ellie was acting. She said it right out that Ellie was like two different people. But she never told anyone, never tried to do anything to help her and didn't exactly try to pressure Ellie into telling her what her problems were either. So when Ellie died it hit Sarah the hardest. She didn't know what to do without her, who to talk to, and how to deal with all the pain of losing her best friend. She also didn't know how to deal with the feelings she thought weren't returned from Jake. She had so much she was trying to deal with and it was too much for her. It was so hard seeing the difference in her Before and After she died. I felt even worse for her when she tried to take her life again by cutting herself because she couldn't deal with everything. I was so thankful that Jake found her and made sure she got to the hospital after that, and that he tried much harder to be there for her after that. I'm also glad that with the help of Jake, and the place she was sent to after that, she really got the help she needed and seemed to be dealing with her issues better.

This book really showed just what the death of someone can do to the people around them and how some people hide secrets no one knows about until it's too late. This was a fantastic read!

4 1/2 Stars!

Sweet Evil Read Along Week 4: Halloween

I'm doing my week four post for the Sweet Evil Read Along, which is hosted by Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads!

Thoughts on the reading. I still feel so bad for Anna. She's still struggling so much with not being with Kaidan and its just so sad to see her go through that cuz I know how exactly how she feels. It sucks to see one of your fave characters hurting. And you could tell even Kaidan was hurting as well. It sucks not being able to be with someone you know you wanna be with. :( I also hated seeing Anna actually have to work but I think she pulled it off pretty well. At least she got some training before having to do it. And she even had Kope looking out for her when she had to work. Kope seems like a pretty good guy. I like him. I was scared about the Summit though. I really thought it might have been her at first. But in the end she still somehow got dragged into it anyways. Ugh!

This weeks theme is Halloween!!! YAY! It's my fave holiday you know! So in honor of this weeks theme being just Halloween in general, I think this is the perfect time to talk about one of my fave Halloweenish creatures!!! So we're gonna talk about my ZOMBIE obsession!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

So we shall start with my most recent Zombie Obsession. The Walking Dead! (Which I happen to be watching as I'm writing this! So bestie friend kept telling me that I needed to watch this show, but I kept ignoring him on that. So as we all know, last week was the season premiere so I decided that since there was a marathon of the past season on before the season premiere I'd watch it and see why everyone was nuts about it. Well. I tuned in I think about halfway or a little more through the past season but I was hooked as soon as I watched it even though I had no idea what was going on at first. So hence my new obsession with The Walking Dead. I seriously love this show now though!!!! :D :D :D

Some of fave Zombie or Zombie like books... Well, theres Ashes and Shadows by Ilsa J. Bick. Definitely scared myself reading those (Don't read them at night! Lol.) I'm also currently reading Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry and it's pretty good so far. Oh, and I can't forget about Dearly, Departed & Dearly, Beloved by Lia Habel! Those are definitely in my faves.

I also have a "How To Survive A Zombie Attack" poster. AND I have my mental Zombie Apocalypse plan! If it ever does happen, it will be hard to pretend I'm not excited! Lol.

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

Review: I don't know why I waited so long to read this book! It was absolutely fantastic! I really enjoyed the story! This whole idea of the Nephilim being children of Demons and living pretty much to serve their Duke (Father) was interesting. Especially since each Duke has their own job to do (like Kaidan's being the Duke of Lust, and Anna's being the Duke of Substance Abuse) and their children have to work according to their fathers job. It was so interesting. Especially for Anna. Because yes, she is half demon because of her dad, but shes also half angel because of her mom and not many people know that. So it was harder for her to keep that secret and try to be a good Nephilim and work at the same time. But Anna is a quick learner. She learned about what she is really quickly, and she learned how to work real quickly from her dad to be able to protect herself around the legionnaires. Though Anna really needs to remember to control herself drinking just a little bit better so she doesn't end up in a bathroom throwing up.

Anna and Kaidan. Man. I really liked these two when they were together! I mean it was painfully obvious there is actually something between them, especially when they were together and alone. I mean they couldnt hide it no matter how hard they tried. I was really hoping they'd try to be together in secret even though it was dangerous. I mean come on. They are so freaking amazing together!!! AHHHHHHH! I understood, but I was really disappointed that Kaidan decided to not take it further with her just to protect them! But you could tell it really hurt both of them to not be together.

Kope. I really liked him. He definitely seems like such a sweet guy. If Anna doesn't end up with Kaidan by the end of the series I'd want her to be with Kope, because of what we've seen of him so far. I definitely like him. Though if Anna does get Kaidan I wouldn't mind Kope!!!! Just saying!!! XD

I must say, I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series!!!! :D :D :D :D

Sweet Evil Read Along Week 3: Truth or Dare

I'm doing my week three post for the Sweet Evil Read Along, which is hosted by Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads!

Ok. So thoughts on the reading. 1. How sad! Sister Ruth died! I really wanted to know what was so important that she couldn't tell Anna unless it was in person. I'm so bummed she died and we never got to find out! Though I'm definitely interested in what this sword that Anna got is all about! 2. Kaidan. Man. I'm so bummed about the two of them pretty much avoiding each other now because of what happened. I still cant figure out what his feelings are for Anna. I can never tell if its fake or real. 3. Anna's dad. I am really happy that he's in her life now. I'm also glad he's training her to work even if he doesn't want her to have to. Its always better to be prepared. 4. I'm really glad that Anna and Veronica are actual friends now after Anna stood up to Scott and Veronica backed her up!

So this weeks theme is Truth or Dare. So time for some truths I guess!

1. My fave color is Orange, followed by Blue (its the color of my birthstone (Sapphire))
2. I drive a blue Chevy Camaro with white racing stripes on the hood! I can't even begin to tell you how much I love my car!
3. I'm a virgo. Lol
4. Besides my two best friends (Jeff and Shay, Jeff of who I see every week), all my other good, trusted friends are online (my closest blogger friends).
5. I completely know how Anna feels in this section of the book with being in love with Kaidan but not being with him and having a hard time getting over him. Because I've been going through that with my ex (who also happens to be my bestie Jeff) for the past 5 months. So I really understood how Anna felt.
6. I love The Walking Dead. Jeff got me into it and I just absolutely love it now!
7. I also have an obsession with all things Sock Monkey. The cute stuffies. I even have Sock Monkey slippers.
8. I really wanna write contemporary novels!
